With its rich soil and ideal climate Colombia has established itself as one of the central coffee growing countries in the world. It is known for producing a well balanced cup with rich winey flavors and light acidity and body. Colombian coffee is purchased either by grade (Supremo grade being the highest), or by region (MAM, a combination of three coffee regions, Medellin, Armenia and Manizales, being the most popular) and is processed in the wet method.
Columbian coffees are some of the most highly marketed coffees in the world. In part due to the establishment of the Colombian Coffee Federation which is owned and operated entirely by the Cafeteros (Colombian coffee farmers). This has permitted the 500,000 plus farmers to develop better methods of cultivation and processing as well as focus on innovation. There also exists a strong determination to continuously elevate the standard and quality of their coffee which has led to Colombian coffee fetching a higher price on the international coffee market, and has resulted in a higher standard of living for these farmers and their communities.
